It’s a time to commemorate the sacrifice that so many veterans made to help maintain Australia’s freedoms. It’s a time for reflection and remembrance and a way for all people of Australia to come together and take stock of the loved ones both now and in the past who have given their lives for our own.
ANZAC Day is a day of contemplation, be it in solitude or with a group of diggers that presents a struggle for many veterans. It can be time that triggers feelings that overwhelm or highlights the vastness of the commitment that so many men and women have made. Veteran Benefits Australia would like to take a moment to remind all veterans that have made it home safely that we are grateful for their service. Lest we forget.

The official ANZAC biscuit recipe!
Overwhelmingly, in an informal survey, the team at the Veteran Benefits Australia office voted that chewy ANZAC bikkies are the way to go when making iconic soldier biscuits. However, if you like them, chewy or crunchy making ANZAC biscuits are a tradition that helps to show the ANZAC spirit.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup plain flour
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1 cup desiccated coconut
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 125g butter
- 1 tbsp golden syrup
- 1 tbsp hot water
- 1 tsp bicarb soda
Method:
Preheat the oven to 175 degrees Celsius.
Combine the flour, oats, coconut and sugar in a large bowl. In a saucepan, melt the butter and then add the golden syrup. Bring it to a boil before removing it from the stove.
Mix the hot water and bicarb soda and add it to the butter and syrup – it should froth up. Pour this into the dry ingredients and stir together. If the mixture is a little dry, add some water.
Once the mixture is combined roll into small balls and place on a tray lined with baking paper and bake for 12-15 mins.
Make sure to let the bikkies cool once they are out of the oven and enjoy!
We understand that ANZAC Day can be tough for many veterans and their families. If you are feeling stressed and need to talk here is a list of services that you can reach out to for support.
